My 3 little ones (6,6&8) have the flysky fsgt2b type wheel trannies and they seem robust and reliable. Plus they can be bought new for <£20 and the receivers are very cheap. 2.4ghz, so no crystals

these are the ones we are running and finding that we often find it takes a few seconds to respond and also finding that sometimes acts like its out of range, these are what we have decided to change from,

I am a Futaba user but Sanwa and KO Propo are equally good although equally pricey. Spectrum are probably the most popular budget brand in racing and also have models all the way up to Pro stuff, Spectrum also have a good range of cheap receivers. An entry level model will always be slower responding than the top models but should be consistent and not glitch. Personally I would go 2.4GHz rather than 40mhz but not many use 40mhz so you should not get many conflicts as long as you get a set of crystals with it. Depends on budget but you can get something like the Spectrum DX4C system for £75 which is a great racers entry level radio and the receivers are compatible with the more expensive Spectrum radios as well such as the DX4R PRO. |

Fair enough. Not had that issue on any of the 3 I have (actually, one is a gt2b, one is gt2c and one is the Absima version, but essentially the same)
