Eos40D and the AI servo speed?

Im thinking of upgrading my camera. My eos400d has seen better days and after alot of abuse and torture it might be a good idea to replace it.

Something im hunting for is fast and secure Autofocus. the one in 400d wasnt that superb. Im wondering if the 40d Is ALOT faster or just a little bit faster.

And since the eo50d is comming now the price will probably drop to.


Anyone done a comparison between eos400 vs eos40?

I've done 350d vs 20d.

As far as speed goes it's the the actual servo in the lens that seems to be the restriction - not the body. The AF speed between a cheap lens and a high end one is very great.

Remember with Canon's there is no servo motor in the body.

Yep, your focus speed with a better camera body will be exactly the same as the 400d - its the lenses that make the difference.

Focus speed is down to the lens AND the camera body - a good lens on a cheap body is not the same as the same lens on a professional sports camera.

When I had a go with the 20d it was easier to get and keep stuff in focus than with the 350d because the viewfinder is better. It's more accurate and relyable.

The better camera processes and sends info to the lens faster, which does make a difference - but I've found it was small - nothing like the difference a better lens makes.

Yeah I agree with you there Stu - I think you only really get sports camera focus speed in a sports camera though, and the 20D is still far off being a 1D.

That said - lenses are what it's all about and it's easy to get lost in the tech and forget about actually taking photos. You aint gonna get a good photo standing there with a 400mm lens - you'd be better with a 50 quid 50mm lens and laying in the dirt.

Id agree with that, it's even more relevant with rc cars than real cars, I even find myself in the dirt when photographing real cars.





A shot looking down on the cars will nearly always look dull and dreary, its mostly the same with any motorsport photography. You want to avoid taking pictures at the angles that people see naturally as they wont stand out. You take RC car shots low as then they look more like real cars and you dont often get to see the cars from a scale perspective.
