As the title says whats the best set up for dirt mid motor or rear mounted motor, tracks not groomed or smooth its normally bumpy with a nice layer of fine dirt sitting on the top, if you can get through the dusty layer it is quite hard packed underneath, a few jumps nothing major and quite rough rutted all over.

For those sort of tracks rear all day long mate. That is the reason you won't see any of the "big global manufactures" (like kyosho, Tamiya, Associated etc.) making a mid motored 2wd any time soon. Those are the bread-and-butter tracks in the major markets (USA, Japan etc.) so that is what the cars are designed for.
In this part of the world (UK / northern Europe) where we race on surfaces like grass and astroturf the dynamics are different and normally the mid motor cars often have the upper hand for a given driver level .... why I have been doing a rain dance before every 2wd meeting this year (but probably not next) ![]() |

ok so we are looking at either
Kyosho RB5 SP or SP2 ?? Associated B4.1 Tamiya TRF201 out of these which are designed more with lipo in mind and wont need bits added to make the car work, or will any of them work fine as they arrive lipo or not. out of interest heres the jargon on the X-Factory Quote:

If there's lots of grip then mid motor. You can drive harder. If the grip isn't up or its wet like roger said then definately rear motor. My cougar is the best 2wd I've had but quality is poor. The b4.1 and trf201 are both excellent buggys and probably the least hassle. Just need to carry your own spares with tamiya.

I have just switched to Cougar from B4 as I will only be racing indoors this winter. The problem with the rear motor cars is lack of steering in the fast tight sections, power on understeer and the pendulm effect when braking hard (rear trying to overtake the front).
My last regional meeting on Astro was pefect to show the place for Rear and MID motor cars, the track was wet in the morning and dried by the afternoon. In rounds 1 and 2 it was all about traction and the B4 was way faster, as the grip came up it was about steering and the Cougar took over. I used to race at the Proline Dirt Arena on clay so similar to your surface and rear motor was the way to go for sure. For me the B4 was a stunning car, very well made and great value. I'm already finding out just how fragile the Cougar is and the price of spares are double. James. |

RB5 obviously!! Loads of steering AND rear end, ultimate compromise for rear motored car IMHO. Tamiya looks pretty good as well it has to be said.
Seriously, Nick Caro runs his with next to no weight in (Ghea front bulkhead and about 5g to balance electrics I think) and I will be doing the same. What you really want is a mid motored car that with a few quick changes can be reversed to give the RB5's rear motored characteristics .... holy grail I'd say! Now if only there was such a car in development that might be available in the next month you would be sorted wouldn't you ![]() Might be worth a PM mate ![]() |
