Default Shorty in a c4.2

What is the the second middle hole do on a c4.2 battery strap and does it enable a shorty to be mounted in a front or rear position

Yes, that is the aim of the holes in the middle.

No, sorry.. Those holes allow to fit a saddle pack in fwd or back position.
The shorty fits surely but would need some foam spacer.
