Question Getting started and coming down to see?

Hi,

I'm David from Hucknall, and I wanted to find out more about RC racing, and what's available locally. Hence I've popped up here, as Eastwood/Newthorpe isn't far away at all.

Can I just come along one night to have a look what goes on and find out more about what I'd need to get to start?

When I was a very young child I remember having a RC car, however it was a Nikko kind of thing, I loved it, but it could barely have enough power to wheelspin on a piece of gravel! But I also I remember a long time ago (maybe 15 years ago!) going along to a club with a friend, it was in Ogle Street Church Hall, Hucknall). It looked great fun, really fast, but too expensive for me at the time.

I've done a little bit of reading about it, but there are so many classes and I don't know where to start or how much it'll cost me to get started. Possibly the 2wd buggies.

So I guess I'm after finding an ideal beginners setup and finding a club that's fun and helpful. Any advice appreciated.

David

Hi David,

My name is Scott, I also live in Hucknall ... I have a couple of other friends in Hucknall that race at Broxtowe on Saturday nights ....

We have raced the Tamiya minis for a season and this season we are having a go with the Shumacher superstox and the Tamiya F1's.

Where in Hucknall are you?

Scott.

Hi Scott,
I don't know what the most common is, and equally what be good to start in. I want to go along to a club and participate in their club sessions indoors, so I need something decent enough for when I get a little better, but not so fragile, as I assume I'll crash it a lot to begin with! This will be my first RC car (well, except for the Nikko thing I had as a kid 20 years ago!

I would need all the essentials, as I have nothing. I've done a little reading.... I have no idea how I'd take to one of those other kind of controllers (the kind with a wheel), are they better nowadays? It always used to be the 2 stick kind when I grew up. It's good to hear about the 2.4gHz controllers now to avoid most of the interference nowadays!

Hi matey either on here in the for sale section or PBM rc near ikea speak to Andy or jonno and they will help with everything you need...
You can either get stick or wheel controller either is good depending on what u prefer indoor you are better to race tamiya mini's I'd say being new to RC...

Come along Saturday night and see one of us we would be more than happy to help my name is jimmy...

P.s the 1st time you race would be free and you wouldn't need BRCA licence but fafter that you would need to get the licence we will explan all on Saturday night and we can supply the BRCA form and Broxtowe membership form also...

Hope to see you there...

Thanks for that Jimmy, hopefully I'll be able to get down there, what kind of time would be best to get there? 1. So I don't get in the way, but 2. so I can ask more about it.

Scott also mentioned the Mini's, is there a beginner class or something? Is that generally more suitable to start than a buggy?

I'm pretty sure I'll go for stick control. I did a quick look for PBM RC, but it only threw up a website, no info about a physical store. Assuming this is the place, (http://www.pbmracing.co.uk/) it sounds like a home address, not a shop.

That's the right address... It's in a small row of shops on a residential estate that's perhaps why you might think its residential, If you get down there Andy or Richard will give you some good advice i'm sure !

Contrary to what you may think, 2wd buggy is a great class to start with and by far the cheapest. Most beginners start with 2wd buggies.

Hi,

Hope the two newbies enjoyed their first visit to the club and saw us as a friendly bunch who are always willing to answer any questions asked.

Look forward to seeing you both at the club soon burning some rubber on the track !

James.

Certainly did, thanks to everyone who was so helpful. I now need to decide what to get. Torn between starting with a buggy or in the mini class.

as 200sx has mentioned, buggies are a hell of a lot cheaper than most too start with, also you can come down and take part in our monthly snowman series at hall park if you buy a buggy. And as Jim has said, non of us bite, we all enjoy the same hobby and have a good laugh also
