Hi, I've seen a few posts from drivers talking about cutting wheels 'narrow' when using Schumacher cut staggers and have some questions about this that I'm hoping can be answered here.
Is this done as a matter of course with all cut staggers or are there specific conditions when this would be done? Is it only done with the low profile version of the tyre? When cutting the front wheels down is it a case of cutting the inside part of the wheel to remove the inner tyre bead area, leaving a single lip that the tyre bead sits against? In simple terms do you remove ~5mm or so from the inside edge of the wheel all the way around? |

Its easy to do Paul, all I use is a pair of curved scissors that I use for cutting shells out. Put the tyre on the wheel and you will soon see the area that needs trimmed.

Well I'm sure others may have different options but I think most people and myself run a narrow wheel (trimmed) for the "low profile"cut/non cut stagger and a standard wheel for the normal stagger. Hope that kinda makes sense

Thanks Andy, that makes perfect sense as the low pro cut staggers are a bit of a stretch on a stock front rim

Ha I have seen this question asked several times, I think the general rule of thumb is Low profile tyre is mounted on a narrow wheel with no insert Normal profile tyre is mounted on a standard wheel with an insert By no means is this how you have to do it as at the weekend I did see someone have a low profile tyre mounted on a wide wheel as he liked the way it handled at the track he was running at HTH |

I normally run low profile stagger ribs on a cut wheel but there are occasions where this still gives too much grip. In those situations running the tires stretched over a full width rim is just the ticket. This leaves the centre of the tire a little lower than the outside edges giving a little more push from the front.

![]() To me it's why it's worth having "options" - and instead of having only one tire option, I have a few different sets mounted up (low profile cut staggers on narrow rims, full cut staggers on regular rims, and even minipins or plain stagger ribs) to hand select tyres based on the track I'm at because they all perform differently. |
