Default Savox 1258 - Won't centre

I have the above servo and a niggling issue. Im guessing this was caused in a big off as the DEX210 doesnt have room for a servo saver, so im guessing the cause is this.

Fault symptoms are that the pot that controls the servo coming to centre isn't functioning right. It is currently about 20 degree's to the right to stop the servo motor (if placed in dead centre the servo motor just runs)

Effectively this meens with my trim set to L-0, R-0 the car is driving to the right in large circles. Im having to wack on about R-30 trim to get the car straight. This is also effecting the steering end point as it is only just getting full left lock now (the servo is at full turn at this point).

Im guessing the pot is now bust but i wondered if there is any way to replace this at all ? I did take the servo apart but i can't get the pot/motor assembly out, it seems glued in (both motor screws where fully removed)

Any help is gratefull appreciated

cheers

john

hiya fellas,
sounds like its new servo time, as far as can find there is no spares for the control and drive system in the savox servos , guessing that even if you try and refit the horn with the servo at its new centre point you wont get full travel in one direction, you could try using a longer horn if your chassis will allow and dial down the travel on the one direction that will give too much throw, its a botch fix but will keep you running until you get a new servo and a servo saver type horn.
all the best

Thanks for the replies. Reg no it's the servo itself that is broke. I can manage with it for now but I guess I will have to work out a new one for it.

did you check the gears i have a 1251 that i stripped two teeth so it would slip in a spot to the left but then it still worked and after one bad landing seven teeth broke off and now im replacing the gears and going back with plastic servo horns ide rather strip those than a $20 gear set , i have the 1256 in my dex210 right now and its working fine for me i had it in a sc 4x4 its way more power than needed but speeds alright and its titanium

Hi Luke, yep I checked and the teeth are all intact. Its the actual pot that site under the gear, looks like it has been damaged as with all the gears removed it only stops trying to centre when the plastic tooth is off centre. Lucky enough I can still centre the car, and get full lock L/R

Will be ordering a new one for when i get the DEX410 shortly though.

I have 2 broken 1258 (burnt out motors) so I could always try replacing the pot for you with one from one of those?

Just had my other Savox last night go wonky on me. This was the 1251 in my DEX410. Again its the control pot that has failed. In the car the steering will go 100% both ways fine, but on the track and under load it washes out on right hand turns. On investigating if i go full right, the push on the servo horn towards left the horn moves and the servo motor kicks in. Do the same with servo full left and push the horn right and its fine. Took the servo apart and behold the same fault. The centre line of the pot has moved so that it stops the motor at approx 20deg after centre.

Lost faith in this product now. They can't take the knocks it seems. The servo saver on the DEX410 was also set loser thatn described in the manual to protect the servo as well.

Now trying to find someone to get a Futaba that isnt going to destroy my bank balance

oh bugger !

Im wondering if it's just worth getting one of the metal gear MG995 thing's I used to use in my TC ages back. they seemed to last well, and to be honest I prefer a servo that isn't lightning quick. At under £10 I could buy a few i guess.

Shame we can fit proper servo savers on 1/10th off-road cars (mainly all of them anyway)

Sod it, just ordered one of these off ebay to try out. It might go bang but for £12 it's not to big a deal

Default strange.

I have only used savox 1258/1268 in my off rd cars, mainly the 1258 and not had any issues. never stripped a gear or anything. in a multitude of different buggies. none with servo savers fitted.

The new xray xb4 i have has a saver fitted from factory, but all previous buggies never had them and in the last 20 months or so not one issue.

I would like to say i have had some incrdible crashes when i returned to racing 20 months ago and i am surprised i didnt break a servo.

For me the savox is as strong as they come, a little hungry with power draw but defo strong.

The 1251 has had issues i have seen, maybe the low profile part of it makes it weaker?

Maybe you have just been unlucky......

A lot of broken servos stem from having no servo saver and using a metal servo horn with a metal geared servo.
Always use a plastic servo horn as it will usually strip or break instead of wrecking the servo.
I would rather spend £5 on a new horn than fork out for a new servo.

I actually only use a plastic servo horn for this reason. The worst of it is I ran TC for years before doing OR again, never once had any issue even cloating track markings at near to 60mph.

I just think I have been unlucky here to be honest. Admitidly to the one that just broke was my old TC servo, so was good for about 2 years up to now.

Will see how the cheapy servo goes and feed that back. I know alot will not like them as they will probably be a bit slow for some tastes...but i prefer a servo that can keep up with the signal between my thumb and brain (which isnt that quick) hehe

Only problem with that is that many of the plastic horns are utter junk and will strip following a big landing with a bit of lock, or clipping a track boundary. That's why i *don't* use them.

Doing a servo once or twice a year is less of a pain than doing a horn every two or three weeks. Which is what i was doing. Especially a pain when they all seem to come in 3 or 6 packs, all but one end up in the bin.

If you are using the front battery stop under the servo, either trim it so the servo fits, or remove it and use a foam block (I'm on shorties so this question doesn't arise)

Only issue with removing the block is if you have a big off and the battery snaps the lugs off the servo as it slides forwards

Doh!

Try assembling the servo to the brace on a flat surface, push it as far down as it'll go.
That'll probably gain you a couple of mm. And the servo will sit flat on the chassis as well.

Had the same issue myself! Red marks from the servo saver on the top of the servo.
