Default Adobe CS2 Applications FREE!

A bit like how IBM 'accidentally' put the full version of their old operating system on a magazine coverdisc - the happy chappies at Adobe have now put online the Creative Suite CS2 stuff which you can download for 'free' from their website.

http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.html

It says you're supposed to already be a customer - but methinks that is bollocks and just a way to appear like those old users of CS2 paid for something that's not free now. I read it as FREE and I think that's the general consensus.

Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 are awesome - I had to upgrade my Illustrator to take advantage of the transparent gradients and line width tools - but for general work both of these are perfect.

I really don't like how the subscription service to the latest stuff is half the price in the USA to here and other countries. I think in Australia the government are stepping in to sort Adobe out, the UK government don't give a toss tho :/

It's just a sneaky way to give out an older version of the software for free to people - if you bought it, you'd already have a serial number! But they provide serial numbers for everyone to enjoy! Nice of them.

It's asking for a serial number, have I missed something?

At the start of the year Adobe turned off the CS2 authentication server so the problem is the original versions will try and contact the now missing server when installed and none of the old serial numbers will work, anyone who already has a paid for copy of CS2 won't be able to reinstall their original copy. The downloadable versions don't try and contact Adobe which is why they all need new serial numbers to install them.

The download page was originally supposed to be only accessible by inputting your original Adobe ID as proof you had a copy of CS2, as you say to protect those who have actually originally paid for it. Except no one at Adobe seemed to figure out that people would just send round the direct download page link.

Officially you do still need an original CS2 licence to download the files. Legally it's the same as using a pirated copy, except unlike pirated copies you know it's genuine and you know it's never going to try and contact Adobe.

BTW if you go for the video software as well you need around 6Gig of disk space.

If you are just doing a straight install all of the software will only work reliably on OSX 10.4 or older, and Windows XP. Some of the software can run on OSX 10.5 and Windows Vista, but can be buggy and others won't work at all. This software was released in 2005, so it's trial and error whether it will work on newer systems.

As I told Rich Lowe the other week, if it weren't for needing 64bit to handle the 18gb ram on my PC, I'd happily stick to Windows XP and CS2.
