What's wrong with my transmitter

My radio TX ruined my attendance at Silverstone on saturday - got up at 5.30 - arrived - radio did not work properly - tried different receivers, receiver placements, esc's, and servo's, along with different crystals (yes those little things you plug into your tx)

I then took the radio home and connected it in another car. It is the TX - full stop the end.

What happens is that it goes completely bonkers - throttle on and off steering left and right.

If you hold the aerial next to the receiver - no problem.

I am on the verge of sending it over to RC DIsco - but I am really fearing a big bill.

Has anyone had a similar problem - am I gonna be throwing good money after bad?

That would all depend on what the TX is.
IMO a 40mhz Futaba attack is a disposable item, but a 40mhz futaba 3vcs isn't

educated guess would say its a ko as rcdisco are distributors.

i have a helios and i have had isues withthe module pins in the tx on the board coming loose and dry joints, i opened mine up and resoldered then all good.

Exactly the same issue Mark had, I had once when racing. Realised it was fine if I wiggled the module, so whipped the case off and I think there was 2 cracked solder joints where the pins go into the board. 5 minutes later and all was good again. I'd check that first if it's a tranny where you can take a module out. So easy to damage the pins. Also maybe check the pins are nice and clean, bare metal, no crap, causing a dodgy connection...

It could also be a faulty module if it has one that plugs into the back of the tx, one of my mates had the same problem, he borrowed a module off me and all was ok.
If we knew which handset you have it would help, as I'm mentioning it may be a module but you may not even have one so my answer wouldn't be valid.

I have the KO PROPO EX10 Helios 40 MHZ.

I am rather unimpressed with my RC DISCO experience who simply say forward it to a chap called Derek Bailey or something like that.
Oddly enough I spoke to Joe at SMD and he gave me the details of MIKE BAILEY who also does radio repairs. He thinks I may have overpowered the radio when I switched to a LIPO pack which I may have have initially plugged in incorrectly - this may have blown an IC chip - not too expensive apparently.
I will report back once I have it returned to me.

Derek has been doing radio and general RC electronic repairs for many many years - I've had many older KO servos repaired by him.

had you had mentioned you have reveresed the polatrity you could have saved us all the time of trying to help!

I am so sorry for even posting for some help on this forum - how stupid of me...

As it happens - I never reversed the polarity - I thought I might have done.

The actual problem was the fact that I plugged in a lipo that overloaded the IC's in the transmitter circuitry - actually a fairly cheap repair - thank goodness.

You gave a description of the problem, were given suggestions on what to look for and people to contact for help, yet you come back with a curt response like that?

I did not intend to sound curt - but if someone is to turn round and post words to the effect of you should have told us in the first place... what do you expect. As it happened, as a result of the thread, and speaking to an RC engineer, I methodically went through everything before I posted the thing about the possibility of having reversed the polarity.

I put in the last post to close of the thread so to speak - as it set out what the problem was in the end so that people would not have to rack their brains on a possible solution when it has been resolved.

If there is anything that has really annoyed me with this is that this has shown me the steady downturn in the RC Hobby industry. I recall about 21 years ago I had a problem with a radio set that I had - I went to Phills Hobbies in Newcastle, and the guy had a good look, opened it up and fixed it - he had a proper go so to speak (I didn't even buy from the shop). Fast forward to today - my local hobby store said I can't help, without even wanting to look at the radio, said go to the importer who then said out of warranty - anyway speak to our specialist (the radio was over £200). You wonder why people go and do 'grey' imports from Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Some teams and importers are genuinely helpful - I recall the boys from SMD and LRP who were very helpful with a motor and esc (LRP). Likewise I recall that that Team Yokomo were helpful many moons ago when they had a UK team. That said, it is no wonder that the Far East threat is overwhelming the local RC industry.

just a word of friendly advice

when you ask for help give as much detail as you can to help other people trying to help you symptoms, model, make etc plus any remedy however wacky you may have tried

its very easy on a keyboard to misdirect any help you may require

i recently helped a fellow oopler trying to sort a issue with a hobbywing speedo after PM phone call and simulated reprogramming it transpired the fellow had a different type of speedo we couldnt actually update .It was pure innocence not ignorance of what we speedo he actually had

we laughed when we finally realised our simple mistake but those sort of initial mistakes on a keyboard can turn into slanging match

most ooplers are here to help never reject any help you never know when you may need it again

regrettably - yes - hence the annoyance. I have nearly always bought within the uk as well - I like to try and support local/uk based businesses wherever possible.
