Cat SX1, Cat SX2, HB cyber 10, losi xxx4, Tamiya Durga/DB01R
Or a losi xx4 with some mods. I would go for a DB01R myself |

I too am in a similar situation, I started to get back into the R/C scene after 20 years out when I found my old Procat in the loft. I have been steadily modifying it to run a brushless motor and stick lipo in the knowledge that any bits collected could be used in a modern chassis when funds allow. After testing my Procat at my local astro track it's certainly competitive but fragile at the new improved speeds. I will therefore run my Procat indoors though the winter and look for something more modern for outdoors next summer. I also fancy something shaft drive as they are easier to strip down when trying to remove crud so on that basis the Lazer ZX-5 appeals. They seem to be fully upgradable to the latest spec as well which is good.
I am of course open to advice |

I ran the Lazer ZX5-sp before the FS family was available and always found it to be a capable car ... the the FS arrived and I was reminded why most other 4wds were saddle pack.
The Lazer Sp was a great car, Kyosho reliability and quality and so much easier to get on with than the BJ4 I had before or the CAT SX I borrowed briefly. Just be careful if buying an RTR as there are lots of bits that aren't really race orientated, such as the driveshafts, which will need upgrading to handle modern power ... which of course can all be done with time. Just be sensible with you motor choice in an RTR is all I am suggesting. |

Thanks for the reply Roger. A CAT SX/SX2 waa another option as I like my schumachers but I'd like to get away from belt drive. Am I right in saying that a ZX5 RTR can be gradually upgraded to SP spec or even FS spec given time, parts and of course £££ ?

Yes it can.
I would however recomend the most cost effective solution would be to by a 2nd hand FS/FS2 and a couple of 2nd hand saddle lipos. The saddle pack car, like most other manufactures, is a much nicer drive and quicker on a lap too. If you go for the stick pack Lazer make sure you go for the steel CVD style driveshafts and steel diff outdrives as minimum upgrades if your going to run much hotter than a stock / spec type motor. After that you'd want the later cars front knuckles/uprights & wishbones along with the appropriate driveshafts to go with those. After that you can keep going till you get an FS2-sp but there won't be much of your original RTR left. I am happy to advise as you go ![]() |

Another option could be the Caster racing shaft driven sk10 which I believe there is a mod to convert to sticks(tbc).
If your buying a new chassis,I would sell your sticks packs on ebay and buy some saddles(3 packs are plenty to race with)as you can use them on any 2wd or 4wd kit. |
