Sounds like the sensor on the motor could be gone.

Do you have a way of checking the sensor on the motor?

The newer Novak speedo (Kinetic / Havok) have an option to check the motor sensor.

Or if you know someone with one of these:

(Senor check is the three lights on the right of the picture.)

No problem.

It's a handy feature. Speedo needs to be powered up for it to work.

Go to the setting. Then rotate the pinion one 'click' at a time, the light on the speedo will change as you go from sensor to sensor (three sensors in total.)

At a guess you'll only get two of the three lights.

If it is the sensor this is what you need: http://www.shopatron.com/products/pr...5942/745.0.4.3

Not wanting to hijack the thread - but don't sensors seem ridiculously expensive compared to the overall price of a motor!

I have a brand new Speed Passion 7.5T which I stupidly connected the ABC wires up incorrectly and smoked. It just runs really slow now and then starts smoking again - well, it did last time I checked. Took it apart and there are no signs of shorting or burning on the sensor and no melted windings as far as I can see.

Now people tell me the first thing to try is a new sensor but inc. p&P that's going to cost me £30, and it still might not work....

When you can get a brand new motor for £50 (or s/h runner for £30) it just doesn't seem worth the risk. Anyone know where to get cheap sensors from to bring my paperweight back to life?

If the motor is smoking a new sensor is unlikely to fix it. The stator is most likely fried. Try running it sensorless to confirm.

Hi Dale,

Is the stator the main part of the motor with the windings in?

So if run it without the sensor lead and it still smokes that means its the stator then?

If you need to push it it's almost certainly the speedo has blown. Disconnect the motor, get a dvm put it on resistance and check between the battery connections and the motor phases. Any that have a resistance of less than a few thousand ohms has blown.

Sorry, was answering the OP not your question.

As said prevously if you've seen smoke it's gone. The stator is the windings but these can be shorted without showing burning. I have 3 SP cans that show this problem. The only way to check is with a milliohm meter, as the resistance is too low for a normal voltmeter to measure.
