I'd say it's excessive wear due to running the gears dry. The layshaft gear is alunimiun which is a soft metal and will wear quickly without grease which is why I don't use aluminium pinions. I don't know what the idler is made from but is probably aluminium aswell.

I always grease the gears in the gearbox with black grease and never had a layshaft wear out. I've heard some people use shock oil instead, but don't know why.
