The lag on a core stick radio makes them unusable as far as i'm concerned.
move the stick, then wait for the response at the car. It's ultra laggy. You won't do your driving any favours with one. Go to a local meeting and try one, compared to a proper radio.

Try pickup a Sanwa Gemini X, either new or used.
Or look at a second hand Sanwa Exces X, a KO Esprit Ultra 3/4 or one of the newer 2.4 futaba stick radios. They cost, but you can always sell them on for what you pay for it, if you end up not taking to it.
