Buy one of each (metric/imperial) and lightly thread them through each pinion.
Should get an idea, unless the brands are stamped on the pinion, then you should be able to guess (US brands = probably imperial, anything else = probably metric)
If they are 48DP, they'll still be compatible with modern cars. You'll have to do some measurements.
