The SKYRC Toro TS120 is a top notch piece of kit. I have three and they have all been fantastic.
The Trackstar GenII is, in theory, exactly the same, but I had one of them and it failed during calibration. Credit to HobbyKing, they refunded me for it OK.
Paired with the SkyRC Ares motors listed above gives you top quality, BRCA legal kit at reasonable prices.
The cheaper Sky stuff listed above IS sensored, so shouldn't suffer from the problems you described.
