I bought a 3vcs and tried the Orange module and receivers thinking the same as you. But I did some digging and the futaba 3vc/vcs don't work with the Orange modules, I bought mine new from hobby king and ended up sending them back and getting a refund. I bought a futaba fast module from japan and bought frysky 4 channel receivers at £25 each and are not that big. I fellow racer at our club has a 3vcs and had trouble with it and ended up buying a hitech module for £38 aand the receivers were only around £28 and are around the same size as the orange receivers.
