Well yes you are right, modules are different sizes for each transmitter, dependent on the manufacturer of the transmitter. Therefore when you buy a Spektrum system you have to make sure you get the right module for the right transmitter. For example, with the 3VCS the spektrum module looks just like the Futaba FASST module, and is same size with pins in right place etc.

You should be able to fit the receiver in any car. I use my FASST system in 1/18th scale micro racing through to 1/10th electric and 1/8th rallycross and haven't come against a size issue yet. Obviously I'm not sure on the specifics on whatever car you are looking but it would be a huge oversight on the manufacturers part if you can't fit a receiver as small as the 603FS in.
