I would say give it a go in mid-motor layout.

I've raced my 22 in both mid and rear on a mixture or surfaces and found that the mid motor layout feels more consistent around the track, jumps better and is generally easier to drive when the surface has a lot of grip.

So although it won't improve your driving skills, having a car that is easier to drive will ultimately be quicker around the track and may well help improve your driving skills.

I'm more than happy to post my current astro set-up if you want a starting point for running on carpet in mid-motor guise.
