From what I understand a traditional leisure battery is designed internally to do deep discharge and doesn't really like the large current demands of engine starting whereas a car battery is designed to give a large current in one go to start the engine and doesn't like being deep discharged and then there are the dual use oones (like the marine battery) which are the best of both worlds and can do both happily.
I'm sure someone that knows a lot more about it than me will come along and explain it better!
