Sounds like you messed up the meshing between the pinion and spur. Make sure it's not tight and also not too loose as well. Should be a little bit of waggle room between the gears but if in doubt ask someone to check for you after changing pinions. The guys at your club might have more punch programmed than you, or maybe higher mechanical timing with a smaller pinion. Could also be they're using better motors or even just carrying extra corner exit speed compared to you, thats half the battle in 17.5 racing
