Usually it's like this:

High pitched (smooth) whiny noise = Slipper
High pitched noise with screeching tones in it = Diff

However, if your diff is very loose, your diff might sound a lot like the slipper clutch. Therefore, check that your diff gear 'can't' (needs a lot of effort) to slip between the two outdrives. This picture (link) depicts the check.
