Try your local fire brigade for lengths of condemed hose ?
Dont know your area, but large exhibition halls ditch that carpet regularly. Why dont you find out companies that do that sort of work and ask nicely?
I did just that for materials for a local RC Boat club and was allowed to help myself as and when required, free of charge. We did hand in a bottle of whiskey and some beers every Xmas though.
