What I do is order online from Amain or RCtech for example and get it shipped (often for free to my hotel or office in the USA). I can then pick it up when I get there and bring it back in my luggage. If I am going to buy something big, I often bring an extra soft bag with me to pack extra stuff into.

The current customs duty free limit for flying commercial is £390 per person, which gets you quite a lot of stuff - currently $642 worth. (it is less - £270 - if you travel by private plane)

Cool cheers should be covered duty free then as the mrs & 2 littens are going.
Are airports ok with electronic goods like esc's and batteries?

Cheers
