2WD are more popular these days, especially at Tiverton and Torquay. Durangos are popular, they're cheap and pretty good, probably not the best but very good for the price.
You'll want to ditch the nimh and brushed motor. The 27Mhz radio gear will work fine with newer brushless setups, and means you can spend more cash on the other stuff, then get a newer 2.4Ghz transmitter later on.
Stuff can still be expensive too (for top end brands) but you can also get good stuff cheap, you can get decent lipos for under £20, decent motors for well under £30 and brushless motors dont need much, if any maintenance.
I've recently got back into it again after a 15 year gap, you'll be surprised how quick they are now.
Theres also a nice club ran every other Weds at Tipton St John, worth popping along when you get it all.
