Carpet i think would be too much. I race on carpet and slippy floor which I didn't think would be hard on the plastic gears. When I was changing the oil I noticed a couple of the teeth looked stressed. If you had a heavy crash whilst on power I suspect that the teeth could get damaged.
I've just ordered the metal gears as the plastic ones won't last much longer.
I do prefer the gear diff to the ball diff diff though.
