Hi Scott,
I don't know what the most common is, and equally what be good to start in. I want to go along to a club and participate in their club sessions indoors, so I need something decent enough for when I get a little better, but not so fragile, as I assume I'll crash it a lot to begin with! This will be my first RC car (well, except for the Nikko thing I had as a kid 20 years ago!

I would need all the essentials, as I have nothing. I've done a little reading.... I have no idea how I'd take to one of those other kind of controllers (the kind with a wheel), are they better nowadays? It always used to be the 2 stick kind when I grew up. It's good to hear about the 2.4gHz controllers now to avoid most of the interference nowadays!
