I started building RC cars when I was 10 years old (now 39!). I would recommend starting off with the Tamiya models, they are very easy to build and follow. I recently bought a Tamiya Blackfoot for my 7 year old son and he could pretty much follow the instructions and build it himself, cost wise the Tamiya models are very reasonable too

I personally build mainly Xray models now, however, I wouldn't dream of giving my son an Xray or Losi to build at 6 years old, these cars are designed for high end racing and their cost reflects this.
