Something that's really helped me with soldering lately is using a brillo pad to clean the iron, just get it wet to activate the pink soap and shove it into a jam jar lid.
It doesn't seem to matter how hot the iron is, it just keeps making it shiny again and again, not like the pathetic little bit of foam you get with most soldering irons which you have to keep rinsing out after every couple of solder joints.
