Stock gearing on the RTR (with a 13.5t motor) is 29/81, so as onekiwi says, quite possibly time for a new spur! If you are ordering a pinion anyway, its not going to hurt to order a spur too.
FWIW, i use hardened aluminium and steel pinions fairly interchangeably, the steel ones last longer. But seem to wear the spur quicker (especially if you get dirt in there).
Depends if you are frequent pinion/spur swapper or not as to which you go for.
Neither are *bad*. Just different.
