You should be able to feel it through the tyre, when the inserts go bad there's no spring/life to the tyre if you give it a squeeze (that's about the best way I can think to describe it

), it just feels dead. Also the standard inserts can sometimes twist in the tyre, where a section of the insert inverts/flips over creating hard and soft spots. This can happen on the first run and ruin that set of tyres!
It's interesting people were using two-stage, I'd been told there was an agreement between the top lads not to use them with them being hard to get hold of and expensive.
We don't have all these issues with minispikes/BB's because the sidewalls are reasonably stiff, the dirt tyres are totally different as they are so soft the insert supports the whole shape of the tyre - not just the middle bit of the tread.
