you have the screw and thrust race in one side- and the spring and nut in the other right? are you sure you have them in the correct out drive? I think the screw should be on the left hand side at the rear. have a look in the manual tho.. if there isn't enough room to push the out drive in there then something is wrong.. it should be roughly the same both sides and the dog bone should be touching the foam when assembled.
