It sounds like your lens isn't letting in enough light. What's the maximum aperture size of the lens you are using?
You'll need a faster lens with a big aperture, like the cheap Canon f/1.8 example, or nikon f/1.4 equivalent. A prime lens with aperture below f/2 would be desired. An 85mm f/1.8 would be a good focal length to try.
