In the 25 years I've been in this hobby I've spent maybe 5% of the time at racetracks and 95% behind the bench working on all kind of projects: from simple mods to total conversions and scratch-builts.
IT is a very important part of the hobby to me, and even more so today as it is the part of the hobby you can pick up whenever it arranges you.
(By the way, offroad-onroad-scale doesn't matter that much: all fun. But things sure get more complicated when you evolve from 2 to 4WD)
PS: one thing I've learned: not too expect too much from my own genius. After all, even if things work quite well (and believe me; they don't allways) I'm still the same poor driver who spends too little time on the track
