At the start of the year Adobe turned off the CS2 authentication server so the problem is the original versions will try and contact the now missing server when installed and none of the old serial numbers will work, anyone who already has a paid for copy of CS2 won't be able to reinstall their original copy. The downloadable versions don't try and contact Adobe which is why they all need new serial numbers to install them.
The download page was originally supposed to be only accessible
by inputting your original Adobe ID as proof you had a copy of CS2, as you say to protect those who have actually originally paid for it. Except no one at Adobe seemed to figure out that people would just send round the direct download page link.
Officially you do still need an original CS2 licence to download the files. Legally it's the same as using a pirated copy, except unlike pirated copies you know it's genuine and you know it's never going to try and contact Adobe.
BTW if you go for the video software as well you need around 6Gig of disk space.
