As for the processes AE uses, it's from what I've heard anyway... Never mind that, you could always try on an old knackered set if quenching hardens then any further, right?
After all pretty hefty temperatures can be produced with pretty minimal equipment (though control may be difficult).
That said I do agree it is up to TD should find the solution to it.
