As long as you know your diff is tight enough you want to set the slipper to slip before the diff. One way to do a bench setting is to have a friend hold the rear wheels while you apply throttle. The front wheels should come off the table while the slipper slips to prevent them from coming up violently. This will guarantee good drive off corners and jumps but protection for your diff.

I noticed the up and down play in the steering linkage too. I haven't done anything about it yet.
