Regarding giving it a go yourself, go for it, you might surprise yourself. You don't have to pay mega bucks to just experiment for now. You can pick yourself up a HS30 for £15, and that's all I use...

Gravity is your best bet, but no experience with siphon, so can't possibly comment. I think Julian of Joo's paint uses a siphon, if i'm not mistaken and gets on just fine...
