Its a simple equation.

More weight = a easier car to drive that adds up to many less mistakes that of course gives you a faster time overall. It could be argued that it can actually make a faster too.

Less weight = a faster car (obviously) but errors are more too that could equal to an overall slower time over a run.

Some drivers also use the weight for balancing cars for steering and so on
