Ok so having read people's comments I looked a bit closer as it appeared that gear ratio was not gonna be the problem...

The settings on the Esc were fine but I backed the timing off a touch and started looking at the drive train in more detail. The first issue I found was the slipper clutch had NO slip! It had been wound up so tight there was no way it was doing anything.

The second (and more important) issue was that one of the pins from the front dog bone had almost come out. This meant that when the suspension had load on it that the pin was catching the front shock tower. I didn't notice it before because when the front wishbones drooped (when I picked it up) the problem went away.. This has clearly been an issue for a while as there is actually a groove in the front shock tower where the pin has worn it away! I'm guessing this considerable extra resistence will have been putting one hell of a strain on the motor. All sorted now so I am hoping that when testing tomorrow it will be all good!

Thanks for all the comments with out them I would probably have been on the wrong path for a while. These are the joys of buying second hand....
