I find if you have two different tubs of acetone - one to soak the tyres/wheels in for a day or two and then another tub to clean them you end up with wheels in perfect condition, if you use a heatgun or hairdryer on the inserts it brings them back to the right shape.

Failing that try a few drops of glue rather than running a bead and when you come to take them off you could use a Burco type boiler to boil them off in water.
