First of all, get down to the clubs and see what has a good following.
Both classes have their pros and cons, they are very different. GT12 is a bit cheaper to get up and running, but personally speaking I find 1s electrics and foam tyres a pain. The cars are simple - but that doesn't mean they are easy to set up. GT12s will only work on smooth carpet.
TC is bit more expensive (if you are buying an Mi4 new), the electrics cost are the same. 2s electrics and rubber tyres are easy to live with. The cars are more complex - but that doesn't mean they are hard to set up. TCs will work on bumpier, less grippy outdoor tracks as well as indoor carpet. TCs feel a bit big on very small club tracks.
If you have a good bunch of people to race against, you'll have fun with either.
