Anyways the bottom caps are designed to bleed the shocks, I used to bleed them from the top but have found it much easier to do with the bottom cap. If they are slightly loose they will dump out all of the oil each time the piston goes up and down, which during a race meeting could be a lot

I usea pair of Mole grips to tighten mine up.
