Put the motor back together and it seems to work normally now - the ESC even calibrates without a motor attached - so why the red light and no power to the motor before?
One of the connections to the motor is a bit dirty - could it be that? (how would that stop the ESC calibrating OK) I'll clean it but can I buy a replacement - little bullet connector that goes straight onto the circuit board.
Problem is I'm expecting all this to play up again the next time I go to use the car.....
