I've done one before, it was by crashing neither. If you are landing off jumps and braking or accelerating hard then it can happen especially on high grip tracks.
Remember theirs no give with gear diffs and the only thing to protect the transmission is the slipper. I used to bend them all the time with a front one way in my B44.
They are definitely worth carrying as a spare.
