I'm really humbled by this sort of stuff, thanks guys - I really don't know what to say.
This is the repair estimate from an approved Nikon repairer:
I've sent it for a second opinion direct to Nikon but I don't imagine it will get much better. This was a £3500 camera when I bought it and it's stood up to years of abuse to get some mad photos.
