The 3M disposable ones are fine, they'll last for a few months if you're only doing one every so often. They'll keep out both solvent and WB paint. Nothing should be getting into your nose if you have a mask on. I don't wear a mask and the more attractive coloured snot is just a side effect of that but if you're wearing a mask and still getting it clearly it's not doing it's job.
As for extraction, the little booth mentioned above is okay or if you want to put something in your wall you need a sealed unit so the paint doesn't interfere with the motor or if you're spraying copious amounts of solvents you don't get a spark which would ignite the fumes in the air. You can get specialist paint fans, I bought mine from a local place Hydor. It depends what you want though. Garage door open should really be enough however you ideally need a through draft to shift the fog.
