I have actually done a lot of surface modeling in solidworks, and it is one of my favorite things to do actually. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes a lot of fun. Just remember the main difference is in the way the sketches work. Where you might make full inclosed sketches for most, surfaces like to use non inclosed sketches. Once you get through that then the options come alive.
