Sounds like you did everything right.
I once had a 25A EZRun faulty out of the box so yours is probably not an isolated occurrence. Saying that, with all the responses so far it gives you a lot of confidence that it's a good product.
It could be worth your while to get a USB LCD Programming box (if you don't have one already) because it allows you to upgrade the firmware. All of my EZRuns were on old firmware out of the box. There also seems to be a few older version ESCs being sold since one of my recently bought ESC's won't take the newest firmware.
