Thanks again for your cooperation on this...and our apologies if we didn't handle this how you thought we should. Particularly if it's offended any newer members...that really isn't our intention.
However, as much as the message was partly for the benefit of those wearing open toe'd/inappropriate footwear this week, it was also directed at everyone else as well, hence the warning to all, and not just quietly to the guys who were unaware of the issue on this occasion.
If we didn't point this out to everyone it could have meant others thinking it was ok, and following suit in future weeks.
Those who haven't been around the sport for very long, or haven't attended any of the larger BRCA events where they have been known to make a similar sort of 'BIG FUSS' about footwear may not be aware of the issue, and we know there are quite a few of you who come along who qualify in that group, so it really was for the benefit of everyone in this case.
So, just to reiterate...for those who weren't there or for anyone else who is reading this...the logic behind the sensible (no open toed or flip flop style) footwear rule is 2 fold:
1) Foot protection - Cars run at foot level and can do serious damage to feet, toes and most likely, to toe nails if you get hit!!
2) Mobility - You cannot move effectively and safely whilst marshaling if your footwear is not securely attached to your feet! Injuries such as twisted/sprained ankles and pulled muscles or ligaments in your feet and legs from moving badly can also be serious, not to mention the associated injuries you may get having fallen over as result.
Although we all have liability insurance as a result of being BRCA members, in order for us to get that cover we must adhere to a few simple rules, otherwise we're all on our own in the event of an accident or injury!!!
I know health and safety can seem overbearing at times...but in this case I tend to agree with it!!!
