Older cars had bigger bumpers to protect even more but those bumpers were ditched from the racing models because they caused more trouble (interfering with other cars) than they helped on the track.

I agree angles are the issue however I did hit a wall flat out in Jan this year and wasnt going slow. I didnt break anything other than the top deck and chassis, everything else is still being used and in perfect working order.
Still I do think the original is fine but the deisgn I have in my head is fractionally longer so should protect the car if going sideways into say a track marker at speed.
